Snakes Pictures

Snakes are classified as reptiles in the groups of animals. The other examples of reptiles are turtles, lizards and crocodiles. Since reptiles are cold-blooded, snakes are no different. They need to raise their body temperature by subjecting their body to sun and get the warmth. The temperature of the body alters as per the surroundings. In colder climates, the snakes hibernate in deep caves or burrows and sleep till they find the surrounding weather warm again.

Till now, over 2700 species of snakes are known to exist around the world. Their habitat is not restricted and hence, you can come across snakes in deserts, lakes, forests, streams as well as oceans. The only place where you would not encounter a snake at all is the places with frozen land all year round. Other than this, New Zealand and Ireland are one of those few islands that are sans snakes.

The body of snake is covered with scales and plates as otherwise they are not protected from hot or rough surfaces. This type of outer armor helps snake to move over any kind of surface. The scales act as waterproofing mechanism and thus water does not enter their body. Another thing is that even though they are highly flexible, they do have bones. So, this makes snakes vertebrate. Snakes have more than 3 times the ribs and vertebrae than humans and this is why they are so flexible. Additionally, snakes also have intestines, kidneys, a long liver as well as two lungs. At the end they have anal opening.
